The second strategy exploits Indian son preference:\\xA0having a girl first child lowers women\\u2019s status relative to having a boy first child,\\xA0and is therefore associated with a three-fourths of a percentage point reduction in the\\xA0likelihood of using clean fuel. \"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"This effect is found throughout the wealth distribution,\\xA0and is not concentrated among households in states with a high child sex ratio or\\xA0households where women have some education.
